Why a Norland Nanny?
Norland Nannies are childcare professionals who have beentrained to the very highest standards of childcare at NorlandCollege. All Norland Nannies have completed an academic course, qualifying them to work independently with children, as well ascompleting the Norland Diploma.
The Norland Diploma is unique to Norland College. It requires all Norland students to successfully complete practical classes, practical placements and a probationary year in employment as well as obtain food hygiene and first aid certificates.
Practical skills:
Norland Nannies are taught creative skills, home economics and practical skills while at college.
The creative skills sessions are based around creating something out of nothing, therefore re-using items of clothing and recycling items to make toys and games that centre around a child’s interests, whilst helping with their development.
Home economics classes teach students about the importance of a healthy balanced diet for children, including how to plan and cook varied and healthy meals from weaning foods to catering for fussy eaters.
The Practical Skills that all students are taught cover everything including how to top and tail and bath a baby; make up sterile bottles; bottle feed a baby; how to make up a cot/pram correctly and how to safely fit a car seat.
Experience with children:
Throughout training Norland students spend half of their time in practical placements, within a variety of childcare settings, to ensure that they have experience with all age ranges of children. All of the students receive new born experience as part of their placements.
Probationary year:
After successfully completing their two years at Norland College, students undertake a year long post as a nanny, during this time the family is asked to submit appraisals to Norland Agency after 1, 4, 8 and 12 months to ensure that the expected standards are being reached. It is only after successfully completing this year long post that a student can graduate as a Norland Nanny.
Norland College has had its own professional register for graduates since its foundation in 1892. If any Norland student or Norlander (Norland Nanny) is found to be in breach of the Norland Code of Professional Responsibility, they can be removed from the register following a decision by the Disciplinary Committee. Removal from the register means that they are no longer able to obtain a job through the Norland Agency or to refer to themselves as a Norlander.
