Norland Confernce

Norlander Round the World

by  Abby Searle

On 13 August 2011 Elizabeth Haigh from Set 98 set off from Southampton with 44 other amateur sailors and one professional skipper, on a 68ft Clipper yacht to start the first of 15 individual races of the Clipper Round the World 2011-12 Race.  During this 11 month race the crew will visit 13 countries travelling a total 40,000 miles, round the world.

In the first race, Southampton to Madeira, Lizzie and the crew of Derry-Londonderry came 4thout of the 10 boats competing. They are now racing to Rio which will mark the end of the 2nd in a total of 15 races.

Lizzie has taken a yearlong break from her career working in a children’s centre in Leeds to take part in this race and is doing it, not only as the challenge of a lifetime, but also to raise money for the charity Child’s I Foundation (http://www.childsifoundation.org/). This charity supports a small orphanage in Uganda where abandoned babies are cared for until a new home can be found and works to promote adoption within Uganda.
