Children In Need
by Abby Searle
Students at Norland College and the children at Norland Nursery have been doing their bit to raise money for Children in Need this week.
The nursery have been wearing their spots and hosting a cake sale all week so that all of the children get a chance to be involved and today they will also be playing all different types of Pudsey games.
The students at Norland College are wearing their pyjamas today, quite a difference from their usual formal uniforms, to show their support and have also been busy baking for the cake sale today.

If you go down to the woods…
by Rebekah Frankcom
You will soon see children from Norland Nursery enjoying Forest School activities on a private piece of local woodland! Norland Nursery already uses Forest School principles in its outdoor space but this will further extend the outdoor experience we can regularly offer to our children. In preparation for the opening our nursery staff will participate in Forest School training to ensure that the children are provided with a full forest school experience.
We are aiming to start taking children from the nursery to the Norland Forest School in January 2012, but we also have lots of other ideas and plans – watch this space for more information!
There are so many exciting things planned for this woodland space including installing a tipi, like the one below.

New CPD opportunities, exclusively for Norlanders
by Abby Searle
Norland College is launching three new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses, specifically designed for Norlanders. These courses are designed to build on and update your existing knowledge of specific age ranges, to enable you to choose a course that is right for you and your current position.
Each course is delivered over one day and will take place on a Saturday to fit in with your busy work schedules. The courses will be delivered at Norland College in Bath by the highly experienced lecturing team, all of whom have in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience of the training you have already completed at Norland College.
You are encouraged to undertake regular CPD training to ensure that you are keeping up to date with current practice. Courses, like these offered by Norland, will enable you to show on your CV that you have continued to develop your skills as as childcare professionals and that you have kept up to date with current best practice.
All Norlanders must also keep up to date with their CRB check (every 3 years), their paediatric first aid (every 3 years) and their child protection certificate. As such, we are offering all Norlanders who come along to one of the new CPD courses, the chance to update their child protection certificate free of charge. We are also looking at offering a paediatric first aid course here at the college and will keep you updated with dates and costs of this when they are confirmed. Norland Agency can help you arrange a new CRB if yours is out of date, so give them a call on 01225 90 40 30.

Norlander Round the World
by Abby Searle
On 13 August 2011 Elizabeth Haigh from Set 98 set off from Southampton with 44 other amateur sailors and one professional skipper, on a 68ft Clipper yacht to start the first of 15 individual races of the Clipper Round the World 2011-12 Race. During this 11 month race the crew will visit 13 countries travelling a total 40,000 miles, round the world.
In the first race, Southampton to Madeira, Lizzie and the crew of Derry-Londonderry came 4thout of the 10 boats competing. They are now racing to Rio which will mark the end of the 2nd in a total of 15 races.
Lizzie has taken a yearlong break from her career working in a children’s centre in Leeds to take part in this race and is doing it, not only as the challenge of a lifetime, but also to raise money for the charity Child’s I Foundation (http://www.childsifoundation.org/). This charity supports a small orphanage in Uganda where abandoned babies are cared for until a new home can be found and works to promote adoption within Uganda.
If you would like to support Lizzie in raising money for such a worthy cause you can donate at www.justgiving.com/LizzieHaigh

Set 33 Display Day
by Abby Searle
Norland College Display Day for Set 33 took place on Thursday 23 June. Students spent all of the day before setting up their displays, each of which had a theme ranging from ‘Space’, a ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ to an ‘Adventure into Nature’. Each display included a selection of the creative work the students had completed throughout their 2 years training at the college.
As well as Norland College students and staff, those involved with placements (where students gain hands on experience during their training) attended the event looking at the displays and watch a short presentation of awards. The Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Councillor Peter Edwards and The Mayor of Bath, Councillor Bryan Chalker presented some of the awards, which were sponsored by Mothercare and Cuddledry. This year the winner of the Best Display Award (voted for by the students) was Sophie Suttie for her display ‘Home Sweet Home’(which can be seen above). Congratulations to all of the award recipients.
Set 33 will now enter into their probationary year of employment where they will work for 1 year as a nanny in a position that is supported by Norland College. Only on successful completion of this year can they graduate and work as fully qualified Norland Nannies.
